“Not only are bloggers suckers for the remarkable, so are the people who read blogs .” - Seth Godin
The title may be the last thing you write in your content, but it is by far the most important few words of your entire piece.
Like, 10 TIMES more important.
Why?
If your title isn't great, the rest will never be seen.
Imagine creating the formula for cold fusion and calling it Fun with Physics.
Probably not going to be seen by a lot of people (except me - I nerd out on physics).
A good title depends on who the content is for, but there are a few rules of thumb to improve your title craft:
Keep in short. Long titles are harder to follow and reduce impact. I read a job article for a blog article that said he'd reduce the rate by $100 for every word in the title.
Use buttons. A "button" is a word or phrase that creates a reaction, ideally an emotional reaction. "the secret to..." "7 ways to make $100 a day..." "get new clients..." "how to tell if he's cheating" These phrases are common ways to grab attention. The buttons you use depend on who your target audience and your intended reaction.
Use emotion. Frustration, surprise, humor, anger, fear and joy are all powerful emotions. Use them to grab a browser's attention.
Use mystery. Don't try to tell the reader all about it in the title. Use a hint. Create some curiosity to get the reader to stop and take a look.
Focus on the message, not SEO. Even if your article is designed more for SEO than readership, don't sacrifice your message. SEO can be important, but even then, you want people to spend time on your site, profile or page. Plus, great content is also shared.
